Reversible bag

A while ago, I've met some girls in Leuven to start a sewing and knitting club. Because I am very busy, I can't seem to find the time or energy to start new sewing projects. I am happy I could take my mothers PFAFF out of the dust, to make a reversible bag from this tutorial.

As an extra, I installed a zipper from this post on craftster. I am very lucky with the outcome!

PS: It came to my mind the abbreviation of 'Thrift With A Twist' is TWAT. O my God.
That is SO stupid, that it turns out to be funny :-P

Knitted napkin rings

It must have been almost two years ago that I found this great ribbon yarn in the thrift shop (0,50 euro / ball :-O) Finaly a nice and - above all - very easy project came to my mind. Knitted napkin rings!
I never made button holes before, but it wasn't that difficult after all...

PS: The most magnificent part of making them was selecting the set of buttons :-)

Circle scarf

The rainy weather of the past days in Belgium must have made an influence, because suddenly I had a mood for knitting. I finally made an end to my second scarf ever :-P
Because I tried out a different stitch (with holes) the scarf turned out to be very elastic, perfect to make it into a circle scarf. Here it is next to our autumn model!

And here it is fold up twice or three times.

I am very pleased with the result (free yarn of course!) although my knitting has some room for improvement. But you don't see that on the pictures, don't you? Haha!

Lip balm in the pocket

It had been a while, but I've spent some time sewing again. I decided to keep it easy and made some lip balm cosies, a project in my to do list for a long time now.
The keyholder things are from lanyards/keycords I bought in the thrift shop (where else?) Also the press buttons were easy thrifty finds. The fabrics just came from my bag of left overs. (Every sewster must have a cute stash of scraps) My sister brought me some free fabric as well, somebody lost her newly bought fabric and she found it :-) Thanks sis!
A view on the inside with my beautiful hand sewing (Boy you have to be patient to like this!) And here it is in it's functional way. It is made to fit all labello-sized lip balms.

In the woods, just 15 minutes away with my bike, I discovered an old layer of sand full of silex-stones. I felt like a small child collecting them! Then I took my glue gunnnn and had lots of funnnnn :-)

A crazy person has to live in a wacko place, right? I always thought correctly placed, small (and maybe a bit weird) ornaments make a great difference when it comes to home decoration. No big minimalistic hide away furniture for me! (Must be one of the reasons why I love thrift shopping) So...to bring this idea a step further, a little bit more incorrect, can be so much fun!
A couple days ago I found a plastic pheasant in the thrift shop. My friend and I immediately thought it would be awesome to make some nature/wildlife photography with it. If you don't share the same sense of humour, I am so sorry for you :-D
The bird was delivered with small metal sticks to his legs, which made it easy to pin him down everywhere. How practical! So why not try out my ceiling, which is like one big cork board because of the isolation material.
I think he's okay out there and my cats will love to stare at him ;-)

I made a pair of earrings out of the 'eyes' of old hook & eye closures. Pretty simple, but pretty pretty also! By the way, the brown stones are just made in plastic china ;-)
Some individuals might not know what hook & eye closures are. This picture might help:
I also enjoyed myself embellishing some thriftshop - bought bangles.
The first one is made with vintage fabric and lots of glue (which had to dry for three days.) The inside is just a piece cut out a disposable cleaning cloth. I found out this works as easy as felt.

The second one was even easier... Just take some old lace and start wrapping it around your bracelet. Then wind some sewing thread around it and make it hold with some stitches on the inside.

Sock boy

It was the 24Th of DEC afternoon and I didn't had a gift jet for my little nephew (Huh???) So I hurried myself to make this little guy, composed out of 5 old socks, "sock boy"!

He turned out very soft and cuddly and nice :-)

New lining and paint for a vintage bag (glitter alert)

Some time ago I bought leather paint on eBay. After I tried it out, I immediately bought another six packages :-D You just rub the paint in like you would do with shoe polish. This is what I did with a blue buttersoft leather banana bag:
Originally it was also a darkblue bag, but over the years the colour faded. Here is a picture to see the difference:
The previous lining was completely worn out. I took out the zipper and reused it with a glitter fabric. Wait a minute... I am so not a glitter girl!?
But this time I had fun using it, well hidden as a lining... Also I found the fabric in a Christmas decoration box, it was meant to cover the bottom of the tree :-P
It is a mix between gold and silver. It makes me smile secretly ;-)

Frog cat door

I know, maybe this creation doesn't belong here (not really thrift stuff) but I thought it is something fun to share, so here we go :-)
I wanted a cat door in my new apartment to keep my own door closed and - in this way - the cold outside. A long time ago I spotted this one on the internet: (and how I realised frogs and cats are such a yummy / cute combination :-D) After some sketches on paper, this is what I made of it:

You can see there's a large blue beam behind the frog's mouth. It's about 4 metres (13 feet) high, so their way out is very exclusive The beam leads towards a big window with complete garden-overview. Here are my kitties using it:

I love how it turned out, my apartment is really not finished yet but it's nice to feel it's all coming together slowly :-)

Ugly pipe wrapped in sisal rope

I recently created a little appartment in an old workplace of my dad. Where my bed is, there was left an ugly pipe (don't know what it was used for...)
My dad wanted to make a little cabinet over it to hide it, but while waiting for this I thought why not make it a part of the rest of the cat tree =)

I used double sided tape and sisal rope (the cheapy kind). Easy transformation!

Little sleeping bag from 70s towel fabric

Yesterday I made a lightweight sleeping bag for my little nephew. The one he had was too hot for him so his mommy chose this vintage fabric out of my collection. I am very satisfied with the result =D (and he was too!)

The sleeping bag still needs a wash and .then is ready to go! (to sleep huhu)

I made some Fimo beads, covered them in clear varnish & digged some other stuff out of my craft stash :) Can't wait to make more bling!

Also! Got a creative vibe going on with an anti-slip mat. Just super glued a piece of white plastic (from the plastic handles of a plastic bag) and a piece of this mat (the one you lay under a carpet) together. I really like the texture and the color and it seems to hold very well!

Puffy top

Okay, to make a short title a bit longer:
I made a puffy top from reclaimed fabrics - partly thrift shop, partly old wardrobe stuff: some t-shirts and a vintage "granny-esque" dress (I love that the print partly looks like mushrooms!)
It is my first thing I made with a pattern from a magazine. Just the pattern, because I couldn't follow the instructions :-P Inside it's a mess with wrong stitches everywhere but I don't worry about that too much ... :-D

Little white strapless dress + my new old Puma sweater!

Hello hello :-) Long time no post, that's what happens when you're starting to knit. I almost finished a second scarf. I say 'almost', the thing is getting me very bored... =P

So, I finished this little dress for a friend today. It was really difficult for my sewing machine to handle the stretch fabric. It kept on skipping stitches, but I persisted. Just went over the seams 2 times or did some parts by hand =P (Probably my machine needs some cleaning/oiling...)

She wants to pay me for it but I find I can not ask money for something that's way not perfect. I told her to buy me a drink (or two ;-))

Knitting takes balls!

This is the first time I knit something, but it won't be the last because I feel already like an addict. I started this scarf one week ago, and now it's ready. Here it is all rolled up Of course, made with a bag of yarn from the thrift shop for less than 2 euro

I started out mixing yarn (4) and than I opened up the layers of colour (1,2,3). I hope this makes sense...? =D

Also, I noticed half way through that I made a wrong stitch. I've put the thread from right to left before taking it through the loop... But I thought I better keep it going like that. A stitch is a stitch, isn't it :-/ :-)

It's too hot to wear but I'm wearing it anyway...... :-)

Three dresses evaporated into one bag

I was buying a huge amount of fabric on a flee market last summer and the (very friendly!) old salesman gave me a bag to carry it. Immediately I thought it was a nice shaped bag but... brown, dirty and boring.

Some ten days ago I decided to take it appart, make a pattern from it and remake the bag with other fabrics. There were 3 dresses that attracted my attention...

I swear I never wore them =D!
So I started measuring, drawing, cutting...

to make this purse! 8)

Lil' close up:
I reused a pocket of the blue dress to make a front pocket. But also the pockets of the yellow dress I reused for inside pockets. Here's a picture where it is the most visible, I think.
The two other inside pockets I added myself:The blue buttons are from the blue dress, but the buttonholes were from the front closure of the yellow dress.

Okay, this is the last picture. A shot from above. Don't you think it looks like a banana? Love it :-D

And now I want to go to the beach (to clean of all the sweat ;-)) !!! :-p :-O :-D

Today I decided to try interfacing. I chose to make something very simple first because I didn't want to spill my good fabric (I think anyone who loves to sew, knows that feeling =))

So over to the Craftster Ultimate Purse, Bags & Wallets Tutorials List! Something easy... Aha! "Easy peasy snap wallets" (Thanks CheyElizabeth)

I didn't follow it all exactly, but I am so happy with the outcome... I think interfacing is my new love, we have great perspectives together =D

Of course also this time I used only preloved fabrics! The outher fabric may ring a bell to some of you. Look here ;-).

Childs T => Easy Peasy Shrug!

After this recon, I swear I will not buy shrugs anymore =D

This is what you do:
- Take any top that is too small
- Cut of neckline
- Pinch the middle together
- Sew through the layers by hand with strong thread, like the thread you use to attach buttons (tip: use a thimble, otherwise it might be nasty)
- Tadaa! Brand new shrug!

You can always play around a little bit, like I did:

Note: If you leave it with the 5 steps above, it will be like this (which isn't bad either )

Something cute out of Inca tee shirt

Long time ago I got this weird "Inca themed" beige tee shirt from a summer love. I combined some pieces of it with a green top from when I was 6 years old. And today... I got something cute?
This project started out as just a practice in sewing sleeves. (That's my excuse why there's no before pic.)
Anyway, good things happen when you don't expect anything... heheh!

This basket was the biggest present under our christmas tree :-) My boyfriend bought it at a thrift shop as a laundry basket. I thought I could make it better with some fabric in it. Last week I went thrift hunting and I found a great old big wine bottle for one dollar. (It's called a carboy for the ones who are interested) I knew immediately I wanted to make a bottle garden!

Scissor happy halter top 15/08/08

This halter top started out as two too small shirts. I made an applique of scissors with the fabric of another shirt. I never did appliques with weird shapes before, so it's not perfect but I like it anyway. The bias tape is also something I recently learned (from youtube =))
Anyway...Scissors = Yay for reconstruction!!!

70s fabric canvas 07/08/08

A friend asked me to make a canvas with a big piece of fabric he had laying around. As a reward I could keep the rest of the fabric. Vintage crazy as I am I couldn't resist this offer
So actually (after taking a closer look) I found the fabric wasn't really nice to frame. It existed out of succeeding rectangles, which I found a bit boring. But he asked for that, so I made it.

I was thinking of making a second similar canvas to go with the first, so it would be 'the effect of succeeding rectangles' (get the picture?) But unfortunately the piece of fabric that was left was a bit too short. Anyway, the guy was very happy with his piece!
I decided I could make a second canvas for myself with the left overs. (First I was thinking to make a purse or something) This is the result:

To be honest, I like mine waaay more (hehehe) I used the edge of the fabric, it refers to my love of the fabric itself.

And I in complemented a piece of 'dralon' in it. I think this was used to make curtains, I'm not sure. This was the most boring part because I hand sewed it in to place.

As a submission to the various LEGO jewelry you can find on the internet, I 'invented' something I call the LEGO mood chain. I saw these black pieces which were ment to be parts of LEGO boats on eBay. As soon as I looked at the shape of them, I knew they could be some fantastic pendants... I bought the pieces like 6 months ago, but only now my dad had the time to make holes in them :-O

It seems that I have finally understood how my sewing machine works. For the last weeks, I really can't stop sewing stuff

Today I finished some shorts, originaly made for the BF, but they came out a bit to girly so I'll keep them in my part of the closet =)

The checkered fabric is from a fake! Ralph Lauren shirt, the light blue is from a piece of bed sheet, the flowery one is a left over from my retro tablecloth skirt.

spiced up bathroom chair 25/07/08

This must be the best pillow I have ever made (not that I've made so much =))
It is for a big reed chair (some call it an 'Emanuelle' chair - from the movie) we use in our bathroom. I purchased it on a flee market for 15$. The fabric is kinda towel fabric from the 70s, another great find from the thrift sore. The original pillow was almost falling apart and desperately needed some refreshment...

My dad was walking with his dog, when he found an old desk chair. He brought it home and my mom was laughing with him. He asked me whether I could do anything with it. Sure! I needed a knew desk chair and I love old furniture makeovers. Sometimes I am so lucky =D

A try at mod podge - old desk lamp makeover 27/05/08

I used vintage packaging paper and some blue electrical tape to spice up an old dirty lamp. It was far more difficult than I thought it would be, but I am pretty happy with it

My dress form is my best compagnon when selling clothes on eBay. But when I am doing something else, she is just minding her own business in the corner of the room. It crossed my mind I could spice up her life a bit, by giving her something extra.

For most of my crafts, I love to recycle. Also this time I managed to spend zero money on my project. I used only materials that were lying around. I broke down an old lamp fixture with a kitchen knife. The white glass globe – which I attached with duct tape – fitted perfectly in a red peanut butter pot cover.

The simplicity of the materials, the making of and the complete outcome, made me feel like a genius :-D

The BF's maxi-minimalistic record rack 28/04/08

How do you storage 70000 records? Were to find a rack, not too expensive, that can hold all the weight? It were difficult questions untill he saw the perfect rack in a thrift shop. No screws, just brick and wood and perfectly movable!

Cats love cardboard boxes, that's a fact. But it isn't very decorative. So I tried to weave a kind of cardboard basket. It could have been way more sophisticated but it was okay for a first try :-P

I made this one a while ago, inspired by Craftster craftsters who made duct tape and cassette tape stuff.
The zipper is hand sewn into the duct tape, then covered in some other layers of duct tape. I used two necklaces for the strap, also connected with duct tape.
For the ones who might question about it: It holds pretty good :-D

Ankle/elbow pouch -with tutorial! 15/03/08

One of the first things I made in sewing, is a bag that I carry around my ankle when I go out. I really can't dance with a purse in my hand or around my shoulder. I used to put everything in my shoes or socks, but by accident I made something extremely practical
Further on this little one is sooo easy: no snaps, no zippers, but everything stays inside (coins, a key, a banc card, ...)! All you need are some fabric scraps and a piece of elastic.
You can make it into a belt or you can adjust the size (cell phone, camera,...), but I didn't tried it out yet.

Like usual I used recycled fabrics. This one is made from a vintage dress and a piece of bed sheet.

I'm in love with vintage for a long time and found my way to distinct myself from other people who love it too =P Never throw away your old old stuff!

These were my first boots. The dark grey was the original colour. There was a lot of tear on the noses.

These are my last boots I purchased. While painting other stuff, I spilled some white on the heel. This is what happened... (I had to use 5 coats and will give it some more =S)

Because my exacto knife was hiding somewhere I got the luminous idea of making stencils with tape =)
First try: A retro videogame tee for the boyfriend (who likes footbal and beer)
The paint did bleed a little bit but I found out that it is because it's too fluent.

Second try: A tee for myself. Yay, finally made something for me ! Inspired on a vintage cross-stitch bird I found in a thrift store which I fel immediately in love with. (The boyfriend doesn't completely understand this ) It is perfect!

Frightful 90s sweater transformed into fluffy boots 02/12/07

Hello!

My life is all about thrifty finds. Almost everything in my house is second hand and I even worked in a thrift store some while ago. I am really passioned about making something out of nothing, giving value to things other people find worthless.
When I feel the urge, off I go hunting. This time I knew already what I was going to make: a pair of thick, HOT slippers for using inside the house. (Like a lot of women I often suffer from cold feet.) I easily found an atrocious jumper, made out of a hideous printed(!) fleece. As you see on the price-label, it costed me 2,50€ (or 3,66$)

Somewhere in a distant corner of the house I found a boring, slightly dirty pillow to use as the filler of my booties. When I opened it, the first thing that I thought was " OMG! The hair of a dead afro-head"... Really horrifying at first, but now I know better: It's amazing warm stuff !

I started sewing since a couple of months, so it became really a challenge! I almost gave up on it, but here they are... I am quite proud of them!!!

Surprise! You can wear them in two ways, cuffed or uncuffed. When cuffed, another pearl is peeping out.
